About this piece
En route to a festival in Mexico, I happened to look up at the clouds, and saw a fleeting image suggesting hands covering someone’s eyes. I wasn’t sure if it was man’s hands over a woman’s eyes, or the other way around, but I planned to do a photoshoot at the event and knew this was an image I would have to create somehow. As soon as I got this shot, the meaning became clear. The center female figure is utterly trusting. She doesn’t need to see with her eyes, as her insight and intuition are clear in the capable hands of the masculine. The augmented reality experience paired with this image highlights the transcendence of the spirit that can be achieved when masculine and feminine energetic systems are in balance.
A few years after creating this piece, I was at a dinner with friends in Tulum when a friend of a friend joined our table. He was a creative director and set designer working on a new boutique hotel in the area and after chatting for a bit, I showed him some of my work. He was floored by it, and I couldn’t shake the sense that I knew this man. I looked down at his hands, hands I’d seen before, and asked him if he’d gone to a retreat in Mexico a few years back. He said yes and I replied, “I’m about to blow your mind.” I showed him Night Vision, the painting he’d been so excited about only moments before. I pointed at the hands over the woman’s eyes and said, “Those are your hands.” You could hear a pin drop in the stunned silence that followed. The man I’d needed to complete the vision of this piece was sitting across from me three years later and had no idea that he was the centerpiece of the very painting he loved so much.
